Rioja mixed cases..

Coming soon.
A great offer just for you!

We are putting together a great little mixed case for you full of fabulous Rioja.

As the weather changes out side, the leaves turn from greens to browns and people turn to their log burners and more robust autumnal eating. The Rioja is a great wine to accompany those cosy evenings.

Common characteristics of the Rioja come from the Tempranillo grape which contributes a summery, red fruity freshness (common in the younger wines) and the 'Garnacha' (Grenache) adding pleasant spice to the often soft Tempranillo.
(Other comon blends include Mazuelo and Graciano)

Things to remember:

  • Crianza wines are aged for a year still in barrel and a further year in the bottle. Various schools of thought state this is the perfect time for a balanced oaky red that still holds it’s fruit.
  • Reserva Wine spends the year in barrel along with a further 2 in bottle before release.
  • Gran Reserva has 2 years in wooden barrels and held for 3 years in the bottle.

Popular with Rioja is the choice of American oak rather than French oak. The American oak add’s a vanilla sweetness to the wine. This is currently being challenged with a new development in that using french oak achieves a more balanced wine.

Rioja goes very well with roast Lamb and winter stews. Shellfish Paella and flying game such as Pheasant or Squab. A Crianza is a great accompaniment to spicy food as well.
